When Should I Fertilise My Lawn or Garden?

Nutrients can be delivered into the soil at any time, but to obtain the maximum benefit, application should be timed with the seasons. This is because the plant itself needs to be actively metabolising in order to take up nutrients effciently from the soil.

Plant matabolism varies with hours of light, warmth from the sun and available moisture. Growth is suppressed in the depths of a cold winter and blooms again in autumn and spring. These active seasons are usually the best times to apply fertiliser.

In some situations, such as dryland farming, you need to apply fertiliser before the breaking rains have stimulated germination, and then again during the spring burst after the cold of winter.

As well as fertilising to deliver nutrients to the soil, you can fertilise in the seed at planting and via the folage. In fact, absorption of liquid fertilisers that are coated over seeds or sprayed over leaves is far higher than can ever be achieved by the addition of granulated or prilled fertiliser blends into the soil.

Shades of Green Grow Potion is a very potent liquid leaf fertiliser which delivers an array of essential minerals, amino acids and growth factors directly into the plant via the leaves. This product makes an ideal complement to the addition of Shades of Green fertilisers to the soil.
